Heron Marsh Trail- 12/4/2022

VIC-Paul Smiths NY

I recently had another nice hike on the Paul Smiths College’s Visitors Interpretive Center (VIC) trail system. The college maintains a trail system that is top-notch in layout, design, and maintenance. The 3,000-acre campus sports over 25 miles of trails. Many of these are suitable for cross-country skiing in season. There is a small charge in the winter for a day or season pass.

Our choice for the day was the 3-mile Heron Marsh Trail. This offers many different forest profiles as well as great views of the marsh itself. Well-built boardwalks allow you a unique look at the marsh that would otherwise be impossible. Raised platforms give a wonderful view of the surrounding wilderness. You’ll also be treated to views of St Regis and Jenkins Mountains.

The forecast for the day was “mostly sunny”. Instead, we had a dreary, overcast day with lite snow. Nonetheless, we had a very enjoyable day afield. We left the VIC and headed south. Within 0.3 miles, we had our first open views of the marsh and Jenkins Mountain, 2 miles distant.

At 0.6 miles, another boardwalk crosses the marsh along the “Woods and Waters” Trail. We continued along the Heron Marsh Trail which soon turned west and crossed Shingle Mills Falls. Soon after that, the trail entered a hardwood forest as it wound away from the marsh.

The trail reaches the marsh again, at 1.8 miles, which it crosses on a 900’ boardwalk. Not far from the end of the boardwalk, Barnum Brook is crossed via a bridge. Views of St Regis Mountain with its fire tower are found at several overlooks. At 3 miles, you will reach the parking area.

Barnum Brook

This is a great trail for any season. With only 160’ of elevation gain, and well-graded trails- this is a fairly easy trek for hikers of most abilities There were several lean-tos and outhouses along the route which makes the route very family friendly. We enjoyed our jaunt with some close friends and look forward to visiting more of the great VIC trails.
